Editing/combining images & image security

This is sort of a two part question. Will it be possible to edit images or stitch multiple images together to create a panoramic image? If images can't be edited, could they be used for legal evidence? Regular images can be edited in software so well these days that the concept of "photographic evidence" has lost much of its strength. It might be interesting for legal purposes if it could be shown that a light field image regains that strength.

Hi James,

  1. Will it be possible to edit images or stitch multiple images together to create a panoramic image - Nope, this is not currently planned.  "Stitching together" 2 light field pictures is not a trivial problem and we're focused on getting the basics right.
  2. If images can't be edited, could they be used for legal evidence - Well... that's an interesting question.  Due to the file format being unique and the fact that we are not releasing any developer tools right now (but we know this is important and it's on our to-do list), there are no applications which can edit living pictures.  I'm sure this will change as the technology evolves and esp. after developer tools are available.  In the meantime, whether or not they could be admitted as legal evidence is a very interesting question that the courts and forensic evidence experts will have to decide.

I have to be able to edit & airbrush my images because I take pictures of models. I can't consider a Lytro until this is available.

I think your technology is wonderful and has the potential to be used in a wide range of fields, cameras and applications. I divide my photographic life between imaging in science/medicine/research and my fine art work. I can see immediate uses for your technology in both. On the fine art side I would like the ability to make a "living image" and then be able to take various frames from front to back in the scene and stack them in Photoshop using the Depth of Focus feature which will take each plane of focus and combine it into one image with focus from front to back. You are probably already working on something like this. The same holds true in science and medicine. I work in ophthalmology photographing inside the eye. Our imaging systems have very limited depth of focus and I can see your technology vein licensed there too. Mark, thanks for your excitement.  There are so many potential areas for development of light field photography, but Lytro is strictly focused on the consumer market right now and we're not looking for other opportunities at the moment.

Is there an SDK that allows access to the raw data, or is the data format available? We would like to try some of our own image processing methods.

 Is there any SDK that allows access to the raw data?

And will you support a computer I/O to the camera?

We are planning to apply it in a process control system.
