If this is the first time you have ever connected your Lytro camera, then there will be a one-time-only backup and calibration process which takes a few minutes to complete.
Once you have connected your camera, the Lytro Desktop software will launch automatically (if it wasn't already open), and begin importing any new pictures you have taken. If you have given any pictures a Star directly on the Lytro camera, those pictures will import first. The transfer of your pictures will be indicated by a progress bar in the upper left:
When transfer is complete, in the upper right you will be given the option for Lytro Desktop to delete the pictures on the Lytro camera automatically, as shown below. TIP: If you choose this option, but later change your mind, go to the "Edit" menu in the upper left, then choose "Delete Pictures After Import" and then choose the behavior you would like to see after each import session.
Once at least one picture has finished processing-- the thumbnail image for that picture will change from black-and-white to color, and the "spinning-wheel" icon will disappear from that thumbnail image-- you can then view and refocus those pictures. You cannot review or refocus pictures that are still processing.
If you are still having trouble with pictures processing so that you can refocus them, click here.
IMPORTANT:
Once pictures are deleted from the Lytro camera, the only copies will be those that exist on your computer-- which means that if you also delete them from the Lytro Desktop software, then they are gone permanently.
Similarly, you cannot re-import pictures you have uploaded to Lytro Web back into Lytro Desktop. If you want to keep a picture, do not delete it from Lytro Desktop!
