Troy Daniels
asked this on March 18, 2012 03:57 PM

I got an error telling my my picture library is corrupted.  How do I fix this or have I lost everything?

Troy, I'm not aware of a fix, but please give me some time to talk to our Desktop engineers on Monday.

  1. Do you know how this happened, this might help...
  2. How big is your library file right now? (About how many pictures did you have, total?)
  3. Is  Desktop is crashing when you try and start it?   If so, please paste the following URL into the crash report before you send it:  http://support.lytro.com/tickets/7425

After you've done that,  please try this to at least get you going again:

  1. Quit  Lytro Desktop
  2. Go to your Pictures directory, and rename the "Lytro" library file there to something else (doesn't matter what)
  3. Start Lytro Desktop.  This will generate a new (empty) Lytro library file, so you should be able to start importing pictures again while we work this out.
We'll be in touch later Monday to update you...

Check Answer

Looks like root cause here is that we don't support using Lytro Desktop for Mac under Windows via emulation / virtual machines.  Doing so is not stable and can cause Lytro Library corruption as a result:

For those who may be reading this thread, if you are not running a Virtual Machine (VM)-- if you have an actual Macintosh computer, in other words-- then please check out this additional information on updating Lytro Desktop as a possible solution:

I had this message pop up while I was curating my album (processing pics and deleting pics).  I can't find any pictures that won't load up and everything appears to be working fine.  Seems like it might be popping up under low-memory conditions even when the library is not corrupted?

I apologize, I should have mentioned I'm using the latest version of the Lytro Desktop on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Elijah,  what version of Lytro Desktop are you using?  It's under Lytro > About Lytro

Also, when did this start happening?  I assume all was well, until it wasn't....  so something has to have changed.  I'm guessing you updated Lytro Desktop but don't want to assume anything!

BTW, I do see corruption notice often too, since the upgrade.. but it just goes away....

Should I as well do the support ticket and log next time I see it? Since there seemed not to be any lasting results I was ignoring it, assuming my PC does not have enough power and gets confused....

Last night I got it, when one picture did not get transferred from the camera... restarted the LD, the image got pulled, moved it to the correct story and was ok....

Greg, I'd love to get a copy of your log file, actually... next time it happens, would you create a ticket and attach your log file and your system details?

Hi Adam, I am using version  2.0.0 (121128.4268).  it's only happened once for me, after the update. Seemed like my laptop was churning memory a bit right before it happened, but nothing appears to have been corrupted, but it's hard to check *.

@Greg + @all Note that a Lytro Library that has had any pictures reprocessed for Perspective Shift (in Lytro Desktop 2.0.0+) will give this error message if you attempt to use that updated Lytro Library with an older version of Lytro Desktop (1.1.6 and below)-- for instance, on another computer, or after restoring to a previous state on your computer using a tool like Time Machine.

(Since this combination is unsupported, the solution is to update to Lytro Desktop 2.0.0 on all machines where you use an updated Lytro Library that contains one or more pictures that have been reprocessed for Perspective Shift.)

This situation is certainly not the only cause of this error, but it's a good one to be aware of.

I do not believe this is the case.. I think all of my boxes are on 2.0.0. But.. it has not happened for a while now....

In sum:  Lytro picture libraries are not backwards compatible; you will not be able to open a library that was created (or modified via reprocessing) in Desktop 2.0.0, in Desktop 1.1.6.
