I like the way that the manual and the introductory videos complement each other.

But ... the manual should be included as a printed book shipped with the camera.

Also, the Desktop app should have Help. It's fairly easy to discover things through the interface, but since there's no help, there's no way to be sure whether a function I'm looking for isn't there at all or if I just haven't found the right way to navigate to it.

John,

I think you're right about better exposure to our manual pages.  We have some good stuff, but it's in the KB and we should be better about exposing that.

I'm going to look into getting a "Desktop Manual...." link in the Desktop help pulldown, which would link to the following Desktop Manual KB page:

Our user manual is in various sections in the knowledgebase >;-).  We do intend on putting together something more formal, but until then, I'd consider the following to be a rough table of contents:

  1. Basics of shooting - http://support.lytro.com/entries/21048627-what-are-the-basics-of-sh...
  2. Lytro Camera - http://support.lytro.com/entries/21035551-lytro-light-field-camera-...
  3. Lytro Desktop - http://support.lytro.com/entries/21052838-lytro-desktop-overview
  4. Lytro Web - http://support.lytro.com/entries/21048672-lytro-web-overview
  5. Understanding Image Quality - http://support.lytro.com/entries/21035596-understanding-image-quality

Adam --

That's a good set of links. Thanks for posting them all in one place.

A few thoughts on topics I haven't seen covered:

Desktop - On page E, you might want to add the detail that you can expand and collapse each story. I know the reveal triangle is pretty well understood by now. This is just for completeness.

Desktop - Include the answer to the "Where are my pictures?" question and suggest an efficient and effective approach to backing up the photo stash.

Camera - Include tips on care of the battery. What charging and discharging habits will contribute to longer battery life? (And, with an eye to the future, what are we supposed to do when the battery eventually dies?)

The specific details now posted for "How do I share a non-public story or picture?" are really important and I recommend adding them to the manual and even clarify it on the desktop software. As a mom, kids' privacy is a high priority and I was initially startled when sharing one picture actually shared the whole story.  It would have been great to know that from the beginning. Reloading the pics in separate stories is a simple enough fix for now (which would be a lot easier if we could reorganize stories online- PLEASE!), though it has made for a long delay in sharing my pics.

Thanks for helping out here, this is great feedback.

We now have a user manual:  http://lytro-s3-production.s3.amazonaws.com/media/lytro/Official-Us...

When you have time to look though it, we'd love to hear how useful this is to you, and any other feedback you might have.

Adam --

That appears to be the same PDF that I downloaded a day or two before my camera arrived. It's what I was referring to in my original comment about the manual and the videos complementing each other.

Any plans to print the manual and include it with the camera?

John, no, we don't have any plans to do so.
