ILLUM - Using Exposure and Focus Bracketing

The LYTRO ILLUM offers both Exposure Bracketing and Focus Bracketing.

When exposure bracketing is active, the camera will take a series of pictures at a range of exposure compensation values each time the shutter button is pressed.

Applying exposure bracketing:

  • To activate exposure bracketing and set the parameters, tap and hold the exposure bracketing icon
    • The exposure bracketing icon can then be added to the Menu Bar.
  • Two selection bands will open across the middle of the screen, with the current settings at the center.
    • The upper band shows the number of pictures to be taken, either 3 or 5.
    • The lower band shows the exposure value increment to be applied, 1/3 EV (stop), 2/3 EV (stop), 1 EV (stop), or 2 EV (stop).
    • Swipe the bands left or right to change the settings.
    • Double-tap on a selection band to return it to the initial setting.
  • To close selection bands once selections are made:
    • Tap the screen anywhere outside of the selection bands to close them
    • Half press the shutter to close the selection bands
    • A full shutter press will close them and take a series of pictures using the new settings

To turn off exposure bracketing, tap the icon again. The camera will remember your selected settings the next time exposure bracketing is activated.

NOTE: Currently, you can not merge or stitch multiple living picture exposures (for HDR, panoramas, focus stacking, etc).  At this time, exposure and focus bracketing are intended as tools to help make sure that you capture desired exposure and focus.

Similar to exposure bracketing, focus bracketing takes a series of pictures when the shutter is pressed - but instead of varying the exposures between each picture, the camera will vary the focus.

  • To turn on focus bracketing and set the parameters, tap and hold the Focus Bracketing icon.
    • You can select the amount of focus bracketing applied, measured in Depth Steps
    • You can choose 3 or 5 pictures for focus bracketing
    • Two selection bands will open across the middle of the screen, with the current settings at the center.
      • The upper band shows the number of shots to be taken, 3 or 5.
      • The lower band shows the increment that will be applied, from 1 to 10, in ‘Depth Steps’.
      • Swipe the bands to change the settings.
      • Double-tap a selection band to return to the initial setting.
      • To close selection bands once selections are made:
        • Tap the screen anywhere outside of the selection bands to close them
        • Half press the shutter to close the selection bands
        • A full shutter press will close them and take a series of pictures using the new settings
    • To turn off focus bracketing, tap the icon again.
    • The camera will remember your selected settings the next time focus bracketing is activated.
